How to Prepare Your Windows for Hurricane Season

Hurricanes and tropical storms have been known to bring heavy rain, dangerously strong winds and severe thunderstorms to the Northeast. These conditions can be especially damaging for your home’s windows.

Here in Connecticut, hurricanes are most likely from June 1 through November 30. Let’s discuss how to prepare your windows for hurricane season:

Remove screens

Window screens can rip or blow off during a big storm, causing unnecessary damage. Take down your screens before the storm so you don’t lose them! Otherwise, you might have to replace them after the storm.

Cover all windows

If you don’t have permanent storm shutters, you’ll have to board up your home’s windows with plywood -- we recommend using plywood with at least 5/8" thickness. If you prepare well enough in advance, you’ll be able to purchase these cut to fit and ready to install.

*Note: Tape does not prevent windows from breaking.

Here’s how you should prepare your windows if you know a storm is on its way:

Move furniture

If you have any pieces of furniture near your windows, move them toward the center of the room. This way if your windows do break, your furniture won’t be damaged. This also ensures shards of glass will not end up in the fabric of upholstered furniture.

Close curtains

Draw drapes tightly across all the windows in your home. Furthermore, lock all windows and doors when a hurricane warning has been issued.

Hopefully we'll have a hurricane-free summer and fall. But if a major storm does approach our area, we urge you to heed these instructions.

If your windows do break due to a storm or any other reason, don't hesitate to call Superior Windowland at  (203) 948-7770 to discuss replacement options.

  2. Glad to read your post. The best protection against any hurricane or windstorm is to secure the windows and doorways. Impact windows and impact doors are the way to safely protect your home and your family.

  3. Do not open your windows during a storm. Some people say this will reduce pressure in your home, but the opposite is true.
